There are specific expectations regarding Chinese New Year above and beyond the celebrations that last for 15 days. These are personal and behind the scenes guidelines for a happy and prosperous new year. Some of the expectations refer to things that should not be done and others refer to things that should be done.

Some of the prohibitions regarding Chinese New Year include not sweeping the floor, cleaning the house, and washing your hair. In sweeping, cleaning, and washing your hair, you sweep, clean, or wash away your luck. Take care of these things before the New Year.

What you should do is open the windows to let the breeze circulate throughout the house. This allows good luck to enter the house. Also pay off your debts so that they do not become an ongoing part of your life. To sweeten your future, eat sweet foods such as desserts and candy.

Your home should be decorated with good luck symbols. The colors to choose are red for happiness and gold or orange for wealth and happiness. Fruit is a good choice and again stick to the colors red, gold, or orange. Some suggestions are oranges, tangerines and persimmons. Serve the candy and sweets in a round tray which ensures togetherness. Another popular decoration is a hanging paper lantern.
