In July 1968, John B. Calhoun, an American research psychologist, once carry out a now splendid research on the influence of open space on your mind. The test, surely, included rats, not people yet his reports were extensively regarded to be a appropriate. Here’s what he did.

He arrange four pairs of mice into a utopian universe. There’re no hunters, no deficiency of food or drinks and obviously, no inadequate of breeding partner. Bottom line is these rats had everything they want – with the exception of space.

Initially, each thing seems just fine. The rats lived as they should be. Their community grow rapidly, multiplying about every 55 days. Very soon, when the number of the rats reached 620, the place he was keeping them in become full. This was day 315 of the test. Amazingly, the number of mouse started to drop since then… to the point where the final surviving birth was at day 600. At the same time, in between day 315 to day 600, the rats behaved intermittently.

No longer did males protect their territory and females. No longer did they occupy themselves in courtship or physical encounter. Rather they become anti-social, and clean themselves. Due to their lack of scars and beautiful skin, these group of males were dubbed “the charming ones”.

The girls, on the other hand, became more aggressive, stopped giving birth and expelled their junior before weaning was complete. After day 600, the population started to decline into extinction.

Sound familiar? Redundant to mention, these rats are extremely miserable during this period of time. Did the lack of space and increasing population density altering your psychology? Who knows? Maybe so, perhaps not. But assuming that you are same as me, you wish to find out.

Try this out: At worst once a week, stroll to an open space. Be it a open land or out of town. Most people feel relax, kind of a liberation when in open space. No mental exercises or brain training exercises can replace this.
