In July 1968, John B. Calhoun, an American research psychologist, once carry out a very famous research on the effect of open space on your brain. The experiment, as expected, involved rats, not people yet his outcome were widely regarded to be a useful. Here’s what he did.

He placed four pairs of rats into a perfect universe. There were no hunters, no shortage of food or drinks and obviously, no shortage of breeding partner. Basically these rats have everything they desire – with the exception of space.

Initially, all things seems just great. The rats lived as they should be. Their community grow rapidly, doubling around every 55 days. Very soon, when the number of the rats reached 620, the space he was putting them in became overflowing. This was day 315 of the experiment. Amazingly, the number of mouse began to drop since then… to a point where the final existing birth was at day 600. At the time, between day 315 to day 600, the rats behaved erratically.

No longer do guys secure their boundary and females. No longer do they engage in courtship or fighting. Instead they become anti-social, and groomed themselves. As a result of their absence of scars and beautiful coats, these number of guys were called “the charming ones”.

The girls, on the other hand, became progressively hostile, stopped giving birth and get rid of their young before weaning was finished. After day 600, the number of rats began to reduce into extinction.

Seems familiar? Pointless to say, these rats are extremely miserable during this period of time. Will the inadequate space and increasing population density altering your psychology? Who knows? Maybe so, maybe not. Yet if you’re similar me, you wish to find out.

Try this out: At least every week, go to an open space. Be it a meadow or out of city. Many people feel relax, sort of a freedom feeling when in open space. No mental exercises or brain training exercises can substitute this.
