Your Memory is a Muscle – Exercise Will Make it Strong
Saturday, November 17th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedWith all the advances in technology today, scientist have come to find out that your memory is like a muscle. We all know that when you exercise your muscles, they are going to get stronger. The same goes with your memory, exercise it and it too will get stronger. And the opposite can be true when it comes to any part of our brain that requires logic and problem-solving ability, if you don’t use it, you can become very unskilled when it comes time to use it.
The thing is, who wants to do memory exercises, which is exactly what they are exercises. You get done working all day, the last thing that you want to do is go home and do some exercises. Most people just want to relax, turn their brains off when they get home. This is where the memory games come into play. If you make them fun, children will want to learn and will do so at school. When they are fun even you will enjoy them and start improving your brain power.
Here are a few of my favorite games to increase concentration short term.
Story Telling Game:
This really works good for a group. What you want to do is set out 20 items on a table. Each person in the group is to tell part of a story about 3 items successively. For example an apple, key and cell phone.
Once all of the items have been used in a story, take them out of the room. See who can remember the most items. Tell the story again and probably the group will be able to tell the whole story and thus remembering all the items
Assembling a JigSaw – Blind
If you enjoy doing jigsaw’s this can be a lot of fun. Assembling one “blind” means, not be able to keep the picture in front of you. Give yourself a minute to look at the picture and then put it away. Begin to assemble the puzzle without the picture. The more that you do this game the better your memory will get. This is a great game to increase concentration short term.
Concentration
There have been many variations of the game concentration. At one time it was even on TV. Get a deck of cards and get pairs of the different cards. Then mix all the cards up. Begin to lay the cards face down on a table. Flip one card up, and then another, try to find its mate. If they match keep the pair by removing them from the table. If they don’t match, flip them back over and challenge yourself to remember where these two cards were. This is a great game when you compete against someone else. Just take turns flipping over pairs of cards. You can even time the game and each time try to beat the time of the last game. When you get a match, you keep the pair. The one who has the most pairs at the end when there are no more cards on the table is the winner of the game.
There are many games on TV and online to play that will help increase your memory. Most of these games are great, in fact the more you play some of these online games, the more exercise you are providing to that muscle we call memory. Here are a couple of sites that have memory games for students to play online. They are for adults and kids alike, these games help to increase concentration short term. This children’s site is great for the kids to keep them occupied and using their brain: . This next site are free adult memory games online: . Today you also see on TV, the memory game for the hand held computer that is somewhat like the old flash cards. It puts up a sequence of blocks and you are to click the blocks in order as fast as you can.
As I said at the beginning, your memory can get stronger. It is up to you to train it, just like you exercise and train your muscles. Like the old saying goes “use it or lose it”.
