Here is something you probably would have never thought of. You mind needs to be exercised just like your muscles. You go to the gym to work out your muscles, you need to do the same thing to improve-memory. If you don’t use use your memory or work it out, it is going to go through the atrophy process and deteriorate over time. Below you are going to find some great secrets to guide you through the memory process. Use them and watch your memories improve.

In fact, I bet you didn’t even think that your memory could be analyzed with your stomach muscles. But the simple truth is your entire mind and body needs exercise to remain healthy. There are a few different ways you can go about improving your memory skills. Use these tips as a guide to help you. One of the first things that we want to do is ORGANIZE the information you are going to be taking in. You have to decide in what manner you want to take the information in.

Read, Write, and Think

The well known learning curve shows that in five minutes, much of the information we have taken in is lost. After an hour - two thirds of it is lost. And after a day has passed - 90 % of it is lost. This is the curve of forgetting. These tips are going to allow you to reverse this. And there are various different techniques to do it.

One of the tips to improve memory skills is to start writing things down. Do a daily to do list, or just take more thorough notes. The act of writing engages your mind on a more active level than just passively listening does. Even if you are paying close attention while listening, you still aren’t as engaged as you would be if you were writing something down. You could even say what you are writing down out load, while you are writing, to engage another one of your senses, hearing

When you read, slow down. Allow yourself the time to soak up the information presented to you and don’t rush through just to finish the reading. Improving your memory skills means improving your reading comprehension. The more practice you get the faster you will eventually be able to read and comprehend, but start out slow. Just reading helps engage your mind similarly to writing, and that’s going to help you remember things in the long run.

One more thing you can do that will help with improving your memory skills is reflect on what you’ve learned. Whether it be the sentimental “Today I learned that people….blah blah blah.” Or “I learned about Pythagoras’s Theorem and it involves.” Both will get your brain working on the day’s events. Simply reviewing can lead to long term memory commitment.

Ok, now to reverse the forgetful people’s learning curve. You can change the learning curve by using Recall. The more times that you recall something, you will move it from the short term memory to the long term memory. Here are some steps to help you with that:

  • 1. - take the information in, like reading, writing.
  • 2. - now in five minutes, go back over the main points of what you really want to remember. This is only going to take you a minute or two at most.
  • 3. - in about an hour, you want to go and review the main points again
  • 4. - now when 3 hours comes, go and review the main points again. Just like you did in step two, just for a minute or two.
  • 5. - when the six hour mark comes, do it again. Take in the main points you want to remember for a minute or two.
  • 6. - That night before you go to sleep, take a minute or two and review the material one last time.
  • 7. - Now what you want to do is repeat this 3 times/day for the 2nd and 3rd days.
  • What you have just done is moved something that was going to be forgotten, to your long term memory. For more information on the above steps visit : study hall. You now have the information stored for test time. This is a great tip on how to improve memory for test taking.
