8 Steps to Improve Your Memory
January 4th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedI was just doing some studying, and looking over my notes and I came across an interesting paper that I had. What I found was 8 steps that I had written down that I used to increase my memory.
These steps really work and I try to some if not all of them when I am trying to remember something. I thought that I would share them with you today. So lets get started, so here they are. Now these are not in any particular order, so you can use them any way you like.
8 Steps to help you Increase your Memory
Focus on the issue - If you want to try and remember something, you need to try and remove the distractions that will interfere with the memory process. So try and minimize any interferences.
Write it Down Important Data - Try to get into the habit of writing important things down. You can get one of those small spiral notepads and keep it in your pocket or your purse. You can use a day planner or even some type of calender.
You must try to Relax - Try to continually manage your stress level. Managing your stress will increase and improve your memory retention and recall. Stress has been associated with many forms of memory lapses.
Make sure you Visualize It - Try to associate what you are trying to remember with an image. This will really improve your memory.
Concentrate on what you want - You must focus on what you want to remember. Target your attention, this will help you to recall and retain things much faster and much easier.
Try and Slow Down - Do not try and rush to do something. When you are rushing you are going to be splitting your focus and dividing your attention. This is a combination for bad memory recall and retention.
Be Organized - Try to have a regular place that you work and study. This is where you usually do everything. Here you want to have things organized and in easy reach.
Repeat, repeat, repeat it - This is a key. Repetition has been proven to improve recall. When you meet someone new, repeat there name several times. When learning something new, try and repeat the important facts to yourself through out the day.
Well I hope you enjoy this tips. I know they work, I use them all the time. They will work for you also, just start to incorporate them into your daily life.
Until next time,
Steve

Remember What You Can In Quick and Easy Steps
December 10th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedYou might have heard of Mnemonics and how they can help you improve your memory.
Mnemonics aren’t difficult or tiresome activities; in fact, it’s as if there’s no pressure when doing the actual memorization because of how simple and pleasant the steps can be. An example of a mnemonic method is the Loci System.
A good scenario when the loci system can be effectively used is when a person has several items or a list needed for immediate remembering. The first important thing to remember when using the loci method is the familiarization of a place and the correct order of locations of the chosen place. It could be the dining room, bedroom or kitchen at home or a favorite route in the park. It doesn’t matter where, as long as the location can be easily recalled accurately by the doer.
Let’s say, the specific locations are the parking lot, pond, willow tree and the benches in the park. So, let’s pretend the items are umbrella, dog food, cell phone and picnic basket. To associate the items, visualize strongly hundreds of open umbrellas falling down on the parking lot as you find a space where you could park. Next, as you pass by the pond, you pick up the usual dog food to feed the fish followed by the big willow tree bearing cell phones for fruits and lastly, as you sat by the benches, a picnic basket approaches and sells you what is inside it. Each time you visit the park or any other place you’re strongly familiar with; you can immediately associate the specific locations with any items you need to remember.
When using this method, it’s better to imagine objects in familiar places in bizarre or amusing ways because it helps a lot in retaining information.

One of the tips to improve memory skills is to start writing things down. Do a daily to do list, or just take more thorough notes. The act of writing engages your mind on a more active level than just passively listening does. Even if you are paying close attention while listening, you still aren’t as engaged as you would be if you were writing something down. You could even say what you are writing down out load, while you are writing, to engage another one of your senses, hearing
When you read, slow down. Allow yourself the time to soak up the information presented to you and don’t rush through just to finish the reading. Improving your memory skills means improving your reading comprehension. The more practice you get the faster you will eventually be able to read and comprehend, but start out slow. Just reading helps engage your mind similarly to writing, and that’s going to help you remember things in the long run.
One more thing you can do that will help with improving your memory skills is reflect on what you’ve learned. Whether it be the sentimental “Today I learned that people….blah blah blah.” Or “I learned about Pythagoras’s Theorem and it involves.” Both will get your brain working on the day’s events. Simply reviewing can lead to long term memory commitment.

Tips for Memorization - Use Mnemonics - Part 1
October 26th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedYou don’t have to continue to have a poor memory. There are some tips and techniques that will help you improve your memory. When finding things that are hard to forget, is not a problem as trying to remember things that you should not forget. Forgetting things can be a very annoying problem. This can be like such things as the pants that you want to buy or even where you put the car keys. Learn some of the best tips for memorization.
You must remember that forgetting is only a temporary problem. Using the tips and techniques listed below will make improving your memory possible. These tips come from the use of mnemonics. If you find yourself forgetting things, then you should listen to the memorization tips below. These tips for improving memory work, if you apply them.
This is going to be a two part series of tips using mnemonics to improve your memory. I think you will enjoy these tips for memorization. If you apply them, your memory will start to improve. Don’t forget to practice these ideas, tips and techniques.
1. There have been studies that have shown that human nature remembers the most rediculous things. We need to use this to our advantage when trying to remember ideas, facts and information. Let’s say you need to go to the store and get oranges, celery and bread. Use the ridiculous to your favor. Think of the celery with two orange eyeball that is lying on a bed of bread. The more crazy, insane and ridiculous that you make things the easier it is going to be to remember it.
2. When using mnemonics, we usually do this by making an acronym. How do we do this. Let’s use the above example. Create the acronym OCB, for oranges, celery and bread. Turn this “OCB” into a sentence like, “Oscar Curls Barbells”. Try to even make the acronym longer so you don’t forget what O, C and B really stands for.
3. Don’t think because you seem to forget things or you can’t always remember what you should that you have some type of disease or you have premature senility or maybe even early stages of Alzheimer’s. This type of thinking can cause you to be unwilling to try new techniques and tip. It can also make you be complacent when it comes to improving your memory. Think of it this way, you have Alzheimer’s not when you forget what you did with your house keys, but if you forget what the keys are used for.
4. When you are alone, start to talk aloud to yourself as you are performing each task that you want to remember to do. This tip will work at the office or at home, when you need to complete a list to do before you depart from the location. This can be making sure the lights are turned off, the doors are locked or making sure the heat is turned down. As you perform the task, say it out load as you complete the task. This is going to help the brain to remember to perform the tasks that you might forget.
5. Start playing memory games. You can do this on your computer or you can even use a deck of cards. Keep the brain working at all times. The more you practice improving your memory, the better it is going to get.
This concludes part one of this series on tips for improving your memory. Check back soon for part 2.
